Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, Italy
The Torre Guaceto Reserve and Marine Protected Area is very rich in biodiversity with its distinctive landscape. It is carefully managed by local authorities, NGOs and locals. Certain areas of the reserve prohibit human activities to prevent disturbances to the ecosystem.
A sea turtle veterinary hospital was established to take care of sick sea turtles. A total of 60,000 sea turtles have been treated and brought back to life by vets. Locals are invited to witness and celebrate recovered sea turtles returning to the nature. The local community is extremely supportive and enthusiastic in conserving aboriginal species. They respect the habitat and understand the importance of wildlife conservation. Together with the support from the NGO, they safeguard the vulnerable ecosystem of area.
This operation of reserve is sustainable and self-sufficient. All the income generated from parking fee and the renting of sunbathing tools are collected and they support the operation and conservation of the reserve. Torre Guaceto Reserve is now an important educational resource for both locals and tourists.
